She is a rich and rare land;
Oh! she’s a fresh and fair land;
She is a dear and rare land–
This native land of mine. –Thomas Osborne Davis
“Priest Mountain – Alt An tSagairt”
Tradition relates that a certain Col. Whitechurch, having learned that Mass was to be celebrated at Alt an tSagairt on a particular Sunday, set out with his henchmen for the spot reaching just as mass ended. He is said to have murdered the priest, Father Eoghan O’Hagan and his congregation. Notably, prior to the penal age the name of “Priest mountain” was “Altakeltie” – the wooded hill.
