Ireland 1845-52 | Dunghill beside the entrance fertilised the potato’s. The pig was not to be consumed by the family but to be fattened and sold on ‘Gale day’, when half year’s rent was due. Passing in and out of the cottage it gobbled up potato leavings from the floor, dropped excrement where it pleased, and even slept on the straw between parents and children.
